101 Introduction - Roles & Responsibilities

Introduction

In the words of the Palace Inventor, "Wizards exist to help make the Palace a better place". In this lesson you will learn how deal with certain problems and how to be a good wizard.

Becoming a wizard is easy. Being a good wizard is hard. When you are granted a wizard status at a palace, you become part of a team, dedicated to making sure the Palace is run smoothly and the users don’t become a nuisance. As a good wizard you want to set good examples, by following all house rules, and treating each user with the respect he/she deserves. Due to your rank and power, people look up to you and will most likely follow the example you lead. Another way to become a good wizard is by helping new users.

You can add a lot to the Palaces appeal by being willing to help new users learn about the palace software in a friendly, supportive environment. Don’t forget, not everyone is as advanced as you are, and some might need help navigating and so on.

The biggest thing that wizards are faced with is how to deal with certain problems.
There are five steps, which help with these problems:

Step One- First Warning

The first step in a conflict is to address the abuser directly, telling them of the house rules and telling them to stop the abusive behavior. Sometimes the abuser is unaware that what they are doing is illegal on the server. Most times the abuser does in fact know what he/she is doing but they will usually stop if they know they're being watched. The best way to stop the abusive behavior is to mention a possible punishment for the behavior. For example "If you do not stop saying the f word, you will be gagged"

Step Two- Gag/Prop gag/Pin

If the first warning doesn’t stop the unwanted behavior, the abuser has obviously decided to challenge your authority. You must not get upset at this, because it honestly isn’t worth your time. If this abuse continues simply do what you said you would do in step one. Depending on the specific situation the appropriate response to this abuse with either be a gag, prop gag or a pin lasting several minutes or until he/she logs off.

Step Three- Second Warning

After being gagged for a minute or two, an abuser will probably log off the server and go to another server. This action does not stop the abuser from coming back in the future and sometimes makes the behavior worse; some take it as a personal challenge. In either case if the abuser continues to act offensively you should quietly tell them that you will remove them from the server if they do not stop immediately.

Step Four- Kill

If it gets to the point that an abuser has continously ignored your warnings and actions, it probably isn’t going to stop any time soon. As mentioned before, you have to carry out the action that you told them you were going to do. Remember that killing on the palace server does not hurt an abuser, and that it is not permanent; it’s more like getting them out of your hair for a certain amount of time. Usually after being killed the abuser returns to the scene of the crime often with a new IP address.

Step Five- Ban

If the killed abuser returns to your Palace and shows signs of resuming his offensive behavior, Once again it is always nice to warn the user before you take any action. If they do in fact behave improperly again simply ban them from the server

Bad Boy Alternative

Another alternative to step four is to use the bad boy system within the palace. Bad boy is a plugin that allows operators to locks users in a certain room. The user can not come out of this room and they will not be able to bring up the user or room list. If the abuser still decides he/she wants to continue with there abusive behavior when you let them out, then you can of course use step four, and then if it persists, step five. In this lesson you learned what is expected of you as a wizard; how to be a good wizard and you have learned the appropriate action for a user who decides he/she wants to break the rules.
